A graduate of Oxford University, Joanna spent most of her working career running the ski travel company Erna Low, and the ski property company Erna Low Property, before selling them both in 2019 and 2022 respectively. Alongside this, she is a Fellow of the Explorers Club and worked in partnership with her husband, Mensun Bound, on maritime excavations all over the world. She ran the excavations onshore, whilst Mensun directed the excavations offshore. This consisted of all data entry, cataloguing, reporting and managing the team on land. Of the many excavations they have worked on together for the past 40 years, she would highlight the following ones, where she worked heavily full time alongside Mensun: Giglio Etruscan ship, Italy 1981-1986; Dattilo classical era wreck, Sicily 1986-9; Hoi An Vietnamese porcelain ship 1997-99; Nelson Agamemnon, Uruguay 1997; Admiral Graf Spee, Uruguay 1998; Elizabethan ship, Alderney, 2013; and her most recent work in January/February 2025 of managing archaeological operations on a deep ocean wreck over 5,000 meters deep.
