Former Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces

Admiral Mark Mellett is a distinguished leader in national security, governance, and sustainability. As Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces (2015–2021), he was the Government’s principal military adviser, a member of the National Security Committee, and a delegate to the EU Military Committee. A specialist Naval Diving Officer, he commanded three warships, has service in Afghanistan and Lebanon and also lead Ireland’s COVID-19 military response.

A recipient of two Distinguished Service Medals, he was appointed Commander in the National Order of the Légion d’Honneur by the President of France. He currently chairs the Maritime Area Regulatory Authority (MARA) and Sage Advocacy, the National Independent Advocacy for older people. He serves as Council Chair and Board Member at the Irish Management Institute (IMI) where he is Lifetime Fellow. He is an Adjunct Professor at UCC.

Founder of Green Compass, he advises governments, industry, and NGOs on sustainability, climate action, renewable energy, and security. Holding a PhD in Policy and Law and a Master of Commerce in Government and Public Policy, he is committed to strategic leadership, DEI, innovation, AI, and environmental security. Based in Carrigaline, he enjoys running, hiking, and fitness.
