Gerardine is a Full Professor at University College Dublin and has recently served a five year term as Director of the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School and Associate Dean of the UCD College of Business. During 2017 Gerardine was a visiting scholar at Harvard Business School, hosted by Professor Robert Kaplan and has been a visiting professor again at Harvard Business School since September 2023. Gerardine has served as President of the European Institute of Advanced Studies in Management since 2020.
A BSc (Pharmacology) graduate of UCD, Gerardine qualified as a chartered accountant and chartered tax advisor with KPMG and holds a PhD in Accounting, National University of Ireland, Cork.
A key motivation driving Gerardine’s research agenda is to deliver societal impact by engaging in societal-challenge orientated research, to influence national and international policy with special emphasis on health and related tax policy.
Gerardine’s research interests span the disciplines of accounting, taxation, economics, medicine, public health and sociology. Gerardine has been engaged as Principal Investigator in the conduct of EU funded comparative research projects that address key health policy issues.
Gerardine has served as an expert evaluator for the European Commission. Gerardine has been Principal Investigator in the conduct of large inter-disciplinary EU funded comparative research projects that have addressed global health challenges including health literacy, diabetes self-management, a WHO Action Network ‘Measurement of Population and Organisational Health Literacy’ (MPOHL), value measurement in the care of children with cystic fibrosis and the care of mother and infant where preeclampsia has been diagnosed (AI-PREMie), evaluation of Sugar Sweetened Beverage taxes, food reformulation and Big Data against Childhood Obesity (BigO), a H2020 study. Gerardine was a founding Principal Investigator of the multi-disciplinary UCD technology centre Applied Research in Connected Health (ARCH).
During 2021 Gerardine was appointed to the Public Interest Oversight Committee of Deloitte Ireland LLP and member of the Advisory Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT Health) and is also a member of the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Gerardine served as a member of the Audit Committee of the Health Service Executive, Ireland.
